OUR STORY
R & R Animal Bedding was established in 2010 by Ron Burrough, who recognized a unique opportunity to repurpose excess newspaper from his locally owned printing company in Lapeer, Michigan. What started as a smart solution for waste quickly evolved into an innovative bedding product tailored for the equine industry.

With years of experience in the reining horse world, Ron and his wife Alice understood the everyday challenges horse owners face. Their hands-on knowledge and passion for animal care led to the development of a high-quality, eco-friendly bedding designed to improve comfort, reduce allergens, and promote healthier stalls for horses everywhere.
A SMARTER SOLUTION FOR STALL CARE

HOW IT WORKS
Paper naturally contains carbon, which helps to significantly reduce ammonia odors. Its unique qualities are evident in its superior absorbency, drawing moisture from the bottom up, allowing the top layer to stay dry and provide lasting cushion for your animal. For animals that suffer from allergies caused by traditional bedding, our non-allergenic paper bedding offers relief. It’s also free from the oils and acids commonly found in wood-based products.

The exceptional cushioning provided by paper bedding has helped horse owners keep their horses sound, even when stalls are placed directly on concrete instead of mats. R & R Animal Bedding has also been shown to reduce scratches and irritation on horses’ lower legs, which are often caused by rough or inadequate shavings. In addition to everyday use, it’s ideal for foaling stalls, horses in rehabilitation, long trailer rides, and extended horse shows.

Our paper shavings break down much faster than pine shavings, resulting in a smaller manure pile. And unlike pine, they won’t deplete nitrogen from your soil during decomposition. This makes disposal not only easier, but also more environmentally friendly.
BACKED BY RESEARCH
Independent university studies have proven the superior performance of paper bedding compared to traditional options like straw and wood shavings:
A University of Vermont study found that paper bedding absorbs 4-6 times more moisture than dry sawdust and 10 times more than straw or hay.
According to Colorado State University’s Department of Animal Science, recycled phone book paper bedding was more absorbent, had a cleaner appearance, and resulted in lower aerial ammonia levels compared to sawdust.
A study from the University of Florida Horse Research Center showed that horses on straw used an average of 17.9 lbs. of bedding per day, those on wood shavings used 39.5 lbs., while horses on paper required just 12.2 lbs. per day, making it a significantly more efficient and cost-effective option.
